The Simple Dollar has posted a great article about how to make a substitute for store bought liquid laundry detergent.  (The comments have a recipe for the powdered counterpart.)  This sounds like a great project to try with the kids.

Simple Quick Ice Cream

The blazing sun is hard on kids, but this site shows an easy way kids can make ice cream outdoors using sealable plastic bags.

You can also substitute a large coffee can for the large bag, seal it with duct tape and let the kids roll it around the yard.
